Chapter 22 part 2: A heartfelt confession

While Lin Li was still stunned by his eyes and tone, Zhou Han had already turned his head and looked at Lin's father and mother intently, and said firmly: "Dad, mom, I did something wrong without notifying you that I married Lin Li. Please don't blame Lin Li. If you want to blame, blame me."

"You..." Father Lin looked at him and said nothing for a while.

“Uncle, the reason why Lin Li didn’t dare to tell you was because she was afraid that you would disagree.” Zhou Han changed his title, looked at Father Lin steadily and said, “Because I have been married and have a child, and I know that parents are reluctant to wrong their daughters so much. I can understand your feelings, and I can understand if you really don’t agree, but what I want to tell uncle and aunt is that even if you don’t agree, I will not let go!”

"Won't let go even if we don't agree. You, what are you, a robber and a bandit!" Father Lin glared at him. That man is simply too arrogant; does he really intend to forcibly snatch my daughter away if I don't consent to the marriage?

"No, uncle misunderstood me. Lin Li is your daughter and will always be your daughter. No one can take her away from you. You are Lin Li's father. Naturally, you are also my elder and my father. If you don't agree, it will naturally be your consideration. I know this consideration must be for Lin Li's good, but yes, even so, I won't let go, because I love Lin Li, and I want to take care of her and give her a happy life. If uncle and aunt object, I will try my best to satisfy you, but I will not let go!"

Looking at Father Lin, Zhou Han said extremely firmly, his tone was extremely affirmative, and his attitude was even more determined.

Lin Li gradually forgot to struggle in her arms and looked at him blankly, unable to regain consciousness. It felt so unreal, like a dream.

Father Lin and Mother Lin were also stunned by what Zhou Han said. It took them a long time to come back to their senses. They only heard Father Lin say: "Well... you've been married before. No father would be willing to let his daughter marry a man who has been married before."

“Uncle, because I have been married before, I know better how to get along in marriage. Compared to those who have never been married, I know how to cherish everything that marriage brings, and how to do what a husband should do well. So if uncle disagree just because of this, I won't let go easily. I believe that time will prove everything. Time will let my uncle see my love for Lin Li and my serious attitude towards this marriage. When the time comes, I believe that my uncle will definitely accept me." Zhou Han said it very sincerely and his attitude was also sincere.

Father Lin was silent in the room. He just stood there and stared at Zhou Han, seeming to be thinking about what Zhou Han had just said.

Lin Li didn't realize what all this was going on until Zhou Han finished speaking, let alone why this man suddenly came and said these strange things to her father. It was obvious that their marriage was just about cooperation, each getting what he needed!

Just when the room was eerily silent, Lin Li's cell phone in her pocket rang.

Lin Li came to her senses and hurriedly took out her cell phone from her pocket. It was An Ran's call. Remembering what she had just done to drag An Ran away, she hurriedly picked up the phone and said, "Anzi, is there any news?"

"Lin Li, I'm sorry, Su Yicheng went to the countryside for inspection. I can't contact him for the time being. I guess I have to wait until he comes back in the evening. I'm afraid you're anxious, so I called you first." An Ran said a little apologetically on the other side of the phone.

"Oh, I see. Well, we’ll just have to wait until Su Yicheng gets back tonight; there’s nothing else to be done." Lin Li felt a twinge of disappointment, but realized there was no other option.

After hanging up the phone—and before her parents could say a word—Zhou Han, who was standing beside her, asked, "What’s the matter?"

Lin Li glanced at him, then at her father, and explained, "I had hoped to ask Su Yicheng to contact Dr. Li —Dad’s attending physician from last time —to see if he could spare some time today for a thorough check-up. Unfortunately, the timing is bad; Su Yicheng has gone to the countryside for an inspection visit. It looks like we’ll have to wait until tomorrow."

Zhou Han frowned and asked, "Which hospital is he at?"

Lin Li was momentarily taken aback; though she didn't know why he was asking, she answered truthfully, "Dr. Li, from the Oncology Department at the Fifth Hospital."

Zhou Han nodded, released his hold on her waist, and said to her parents, "Uncle, Auntie, I’m just going to step out to make a call." With that, he opened the door and walked out.

This left Lin Li and her parents in the room, looking at one another in bewilderment.

Once outside, Zhou Han didn't make the call immediately; instead, he looked for his mother. After searching the living room in vain, he remembered to check Xiaobin’s room.

He pushed the door open and found his mother there; she was holding Xiaobin’s hand, her eyes reddened with heartache. Zhou Han gently closed the door behind him, stood behind his mother, and softly called out, "Mom."

Only then did his mother turn around. She looked at him and asked, "How did the child get that injury on his hand?"

Zhou Han stared at the child for a long moment before slowly saying, "Ling Ran did it."

"That heartless woman—I knew she was no good!" his mother said bitterly. She gathered the child into her arms and stroked his back, her heart aching. "How could she be so cruel? He’s just a little child—how could she bring herself to hit him?"

Zhou Han remained silent, standing motionless. He had asked himself—and Ling Ran—that very question time and again. How could she lay a hand on her own biological son? Was the difference between people really that vast? Lin Li had tormented herself almost to the point of anorexia over a miscarriage caused by an accident, yet Ling Ran could repeatedly inflict harm on the child.

After holding the child for a while, his mother wiped the tears from her face, turned to Zhou Han, and asked, "Why did you come out? What did your in-laws say?"

Zhou Han finally remembered why he had come out. He hurriedly asked, "Mom, do you know the president of the Fifth Hospital? Could you ask him to help get in touch with Dr. Li from the oncology department there?"

"What’s wrong?" his mother asked, frowning. "Why do you need to contact Dr. Li all of a sudden? Is something wrong with someone?"

"Lin Li’s father used to be Dr. Li’s patient. They came to Jiang city this time because they were worried about a recurrence of his old illness and wanted to get a thorough check-up," Zhou Han explained truthfully.

"I do, I do. I’ll call the president of the Fifth Hospital right now. His wife is my mahjong partner; I’ll have her arrange a comprehensive check-up for your father-in-law as soon as possible."

As she spoke, his mother reached into her pocket for her phone to make the call. Zhou Han nodded and turned to go out, telling Lin Li and the others to get ready so they could head to the hospital immediately and arrange for the various tests as soon as possible.
